A) GREETING

1) WHO IS THE RENAISSANCE NEGRESSE?
Haitian/Chinese-American multi-media healing artist Cassendre Xavier coined the term *"renaissance negresse" in 2002. A musician, writer, fine artist, and actress, Cassendre (who also works under the names Amethyste Rah and Amrita Waterfalls, and who also became an ordained Interfaith Minister in September 2010) says the term describes a black woman who is skilled or gifted in 3 or more arts. Xavier is a recipient of a $15,000 Leeway Transformation Award which "supports women and trans artists creating art and social change". Cassendre founded and directed several Philadelphia arts initiatives including The Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series (Est. 2002) and The Black Women's Arts Festival (Est. 2003). She also teaches classes, and leads or co-leads workshops and support groups related to creativity, personal growth, recovery (from abuse and addictions), relationships, and yoga. She is originally from Brooklyn, NY and has been living creatively and joyfully in Philadelphia since 1990. [*"Negresse, Negre: In the French- and Spanish-speaking Caribbean Islands, these words often have a connotation of affection, entirely non-racial in meaning. `Ma petite negresse, mon negre, are equivalent to `My dear, my darling, my sweet.'" [From Masters of the Dew, a contemporary classic novel by the Haitian author Jacques Roumain, translated by Langston Hughes and Mercer Cook.]

PREVIOUS (Since Previous Release of r.n. musecat on April 2014)

2014:
April – I moved to and began interviewing potential co-habitants of an intentional cooperartive wimmin's household. (Due to its location, and its being empty, the house did not attract the amount of interest in the necessary amount of time for this to become a reality.)
April – I began negotiations to possibly hold a Black Women's Arts Festival in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. (It was not to be.)
May 1 – My article " is published in Wisdom Magazine's online edition:
June 24th – My proposal to have The Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series at the Free Library of Philadelphia's Walnut Street West branch was accepted. (However, due to the difficulty of finding featured readers available at that venue's early hour, the Series was cancelled at that location.)
July 31 – Applied for the Leeway Foundation's Art & Change Grant ($2,500 for The Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series to continue, and to create a bi-monthly chapbook of the featured readers' works. Application was later denied.)
August – Applied, interviewed, and began working at two independent bookstores, simultaneously.
September 5-7 – Attended and presented workshops at Sisterspace Weekend, in Darlington MD. The workshops were: "Raw Foods for the Rest of Us: How to Eat Better Without Being Perfect", "Sexual Healing with the Angels", and "Soulmate Attraction for the Rest of Us: Dating & Relationships for the Poly, Recovering, Survivor & Tantric." (It was my first time presenting any of those workshops, I had a great time, and received lots of good reviews from the attendees!)
Sept. 11 – I hosted the Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series at Big Blue Marble Bookstore in West Mt. Airy, featuring Maleka Fruean and Phoenix Mystique.
Sept. 13 – I travel to NJ to sing and play guitar at my cousin's wedding reception.
Sept. 27 – I sing and play guitar at The Folk Factory, in Mt. Airy. Probably my 6thtime playing that venue since moving to Philly in 1990.
Sept. 28 – Perform spoken word at Queer Memoir comedy event at the William Way LGBT Community Center. You can see my performance on YouTube here:
Oct. 9 – I hosted the Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series at Big Blue Marble Bookstore in Mt. Airy, featuring Renee Bess.
Oct. 22 – I perform with David Rovics at a fundraiser benefiting the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) at Calvary United Methodist Church in West Philly. We trade product and he gives me a copy of his marvelous pamphlet
Oct. 23 – I am the opening act for singer-songwriter-guitarist Dave Nachmanoff, at the Lansdowne Folk Club in Lansdowne PA. There I meet Germany-based singer-songwriter Ann Burghard who takes pictures of me, one of which ends up gracing the cover of my 7th and latest album, Hope (released in February 2015 to good review by Philly Weekly editor Stephen Segal.
Nov. 8 – I lead my class "Raw Food for the Rest of Us: How to Eat Better without Being Perfect" for the Mt. Airy Learning Tree, at the Unitarian Society of Germantown.
Nov. 13 - I hosted the Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series at Big Blue Marble Bookstore in Mt. Airy, featuring Victoria Brownworth and Lisa R. Nelson.

2015:
Feb. 12 - I hosted the Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series at Big Blue Marble Bookstore in Mt. Airy, featuring Susan DiPrionio and Aziza Kinteh.
Feb. 13 – Hope CD Release Concert at Tin Angel, featuring:
Feb. 22 – Presented my workshop "Soulmate Attraction for the Rest of Us: Dating & Relationships for the Poly, Recovering, Survivor & Tantric" at the 10th Annual Poly Living Conference in Philadelphia. (It was very successful, and sentimental for me because I love conferences and met my previous partner there at the 7th Annual in 2012!
May 14 - I hosted the Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series at Big Blue Marble Bookstore in Mt. Airy, featuring Sarah Sawyers-Lovett.
June 2 – Although technically homeless and staying with family and friends since October 2013 (the death of my partner Tom in March 2013 being a major impetus), I officially enter and become a residence at an emergency shelter for single women in Philadelphia. I am still a resident there at the time of this writing, 5 months later.
June 7 – I sing and play guitar at the wedding of local activist and one of my long-time Philly acquaintances, Nijmie Dzurinko.
June 11 - I hosted the Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series at Big Blue Marble Bookstore in Mt. Airy, featuring Krista Nelson.
July 9 - I hosted the Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series at Big Blue Marble Bookstore in Mt. Airy, featuring Natalie C. Felix
July 18 – I sing and play guitar at the Lansdowne Farmer's Market. It's my annual and perhaps 4th or 5th appearance.
Sept 10 - I hosted the Women's Writing & Spoken Word Series at Big Blue Marble Bookstore in Mt. Airy, featuring Josephine Curry. (This would be the last Series at Big Blue Marble as I announce shortly thereafter that the Series is now on hiatus, in part due to my repeated attempts at having curfew extension at the shelter approved.)
Sept 17 – Submitted proposal to the Mt. Airy Learning Tree to present my "Empowering Affirmations Yoga" class in their Winter series.
Sept. 23 – My "Empowering Affirmations Yoga" class begins at Ahimsa House!
Oct. 3 – Attended Philadelphia's Mind Body Spirit Expo for the first time (in Oaks, PA) and performed free angel readings for people in the eating areas as well as after an angel reading workshop by a featured presenter. Very exciting and rewarding!
Oct. 15 - I sang and played guitar at a private house party for former Editor-in-Chief & Art Director of Philly Weekly

I also:

Collaborated with Donna Wolf Gatti on our angel reading work and her website. http://angelacademy.com/
Submitted a proposal to teach yoga at Ahimsa House healing center in West Philly (NOT the Ahimsa collective wimmin's household I used to live in and that still exists, also in West Philly).

 And more!!!
