I've been thinking a lot about this drawing ever since that Sterling/Clippers thing started. It's called "Ex-Boyfriend" and was created from truth and ink circa 1995.

I'm Huge, So What? Get Over It!

================

I’m Huge, So What? Get Over It!

Years ago when I was working at a chain bookstore (remember those?), Ivana Trump wrote a book called Don’t Get Mad, Get Even. I read it and liked it, for the most part.

But I remember there was a section I didn’t like at all. It was where she was talking about what not to do after a divorce: Don’t just eat your pain away, she said. Well, not in those exact words. Those are my words. She basically said, “Whatever you do, don’t just eat a lot of sweets and let yourself go.” Aaaaaargh!! I thought to myself. And even though I’m not big on sweets (more of a savory gal, myself, and bulk. Absolutely a bulk eater. Yep. Bulk n’ savory carbs, that’s me), I still really resented her admonishment of overeating as a coping mechanism.

“Easy for you,” I thought. That bitch! Ms. “I Can Afford To Have Live-In Chefs”, and oh yeah, “I Don’t Have an Eating Disorder,” either, ya poor schmucks!

Maybe I’ll write a book called, “How To Lose the 20lbs You Gain After Your Partner Dies And You Move In With Relatives In The Suburbs Where Everyone Drives Everywhere And You Don’t Drive And You’re Depressed And Grieving Anyway So You Just Stay Home And Watch TV Or Sleep All The Time.” Yeah, maybe I should write that book because I am a “multi-media healing artist” after all, and art is my medicine.

After you’ve gained a bunch of weight over the course of, say, oh, I dunno, eight months, for example (just for starters), if you’ve typically avoided mirrors and you haven’t seen your usual people, you have no idea how big you’ve gotten.

I didn’t know how big I was getting until I started having physical difficulties. My belly was super huge and hurting all the time, and so was my back, making it difficult to stand even for the 20 minutes or so that it took to wash thd dishes. Then, it really hit home when I was looking at people in persun and on TV and the same people who used to look average to me before were suddenly looking much slimmer, and everyone who was pudgy looked average-sized. That’s the first time I realized I’d gained a significant amount of weight, when I’d say to someone, “You’ve lost some weight!” And they’d reply, “No, actually, I haven’t.” “Oh, no,” I’d think, “That means I’ve gained weight!”

I’ve returned Ye Olde City of Philadelphia several times for errands during the 8 months I was in the suburbs. Thankfully, my efforts at avoiding familiar faces were successful. My reasons for avoidance were threefold: 1) I was depressed and mourning, and depressed, grieving people feel much more comfortable hiding out where we don’t have to be seen. 2) I was super broke and didn’t have any clothes. All my belongings had been put into storage before I moved quickly out, and I didn’t have money to buy new clothes. I wasn’t very presentable and didn’t want to be seen. Plus, I don’t know if I mentioned it already three or four times but I was depressed, grieving, and happier hiding in the house. 3) My musical career was in a stalwart and I didn’t want to have to answer any questions. “Are you performing anywhere?” is a killer when the answer is a gig more than 6 months away at a venue most of your audience has never heard of, and you don’t have fliers to promote it. But the worst is, “Are you still performing?” As though I could ever stop. Even when I’m 90 I won’t stop. Luciano Pavarotti’s father still was in fine voice at 90 and so will mine. But yeah, avoiding this “Where’s your musical career going these days” question was definitely a motive behind not being seen and not interacting with others. (And you may have heard I was also depressed and grieving the death of my sweetheart. Dunno if you heard that yet.)

So, I’ve been afraid lately of what I would see in others’ eyes when I return to Philly this week and show my extra-fluffy body. How did this “raw angel”, live foodist let this happen. Well, life happens. And thanks to the gift and craft of writing, I can take some of the sting out by talking about it.

I am not my body. My body is an expression of my soul and whatever damage I’ve endured that makes it hard to take good care of myself all the time is part of my journey and something I am honored to share because I know I’m not alone in this.

I won’t let fear of what others will think of me, my failure to remain on the high raw vegan path, my failure to consistentment exercise, lose weight, and care for my body the way someone with healthy self-esteem would, I won’t let that fear of judgment keep me from going out and engaging with the world.

I will remember that any shame I see in anyone’s eyes is their business – their projection – their story, their responsibility. It’s not mine unless I choose to express or project it.

I saw a friend recently, and the story I make up is that he reacted differently to me than before. I told myself it was because he was shocked and embarrassed for me at how big I’ve gotten, how much weight I’d gained. This story kept me from hugging him as usual, because I felt so ugly and self-conscious and embarrassed. I realize now that he was very likely feeling neutral. I could tell he was waiting for that hug, and disappointed I hadn’t offered it. He’s a tall and slender deud, and black, and most black guys of any size, I’ve noticed, don’t give a tiddly hoot about a woman’s weight.

Not being to generalizational, if anything, my melanin-enriched male contemporaries tend to prefer a little more fleshly presence on those of the female purrSwayze.

Replaying that incident later is what gave me the idea for the title of this blog. I thought to myself, “You’re huge, Cassendre, so what? Get over it!”

(You thought I was saying that to other people about me, huh? Gotcha, sweetie!)

I am not my body. I am my spirit, and that is much, much larger than that. And that’s a good thing!

So, I’m gonna do the best I can with what I have, be okay with who I am, go out and attend events, circulate flyers about my projects, and take flyers of other people’s projects, and engage. Engage the way I did in the better days, in the fitter days, in the lighter days, in the healthier and more hope-filled days. Action trumps everything else, especially when it’s fueled by, and coming from a place of, The Love.

If you’re going through a similar thing, remember this, it’s the energy and intention you project that shapes everything else. It affects how you dress and carry yourself, it affects your grooming, it affects how you interact with others, whether you’re inhibited and ashamed or open and confident and engaging. Others will see what you project from within, and this goes far and beyond your mere weight or appearance.

If you’re going through a similar thing, remember how you’ve viewed others who didn’t feel attractive. Didn’t you see them as much more beautiful or attractive than they saw themselves? No one ever is as harsh in viewing others than we are with ourselves, remember that.

When I was preparing to pose nude for an art class the first time, I was going out of my mind with fear and worry about my appearance until I remembered that. “No one’s going to judge you nearly as harshly as you judge yourself”, I thought. That allowed me to completely switch from being totally afraid and worried to being just a little nervous but mostly excited about and looking forward to the adventure. (I did learn during that gig, however, that the white female art students indeed were the harshest on me and the black male one – yes, there was only one - the kindest, in their interpretations, but that story’s for another time, and only serves to illustrate that white chyks have the hardest time with extra weight and black wimmin, the easiest, due to cultural preferences on both sides.)

Love and project love, no matter what your size, and every day, fat or thin, will be better, for you and for everyone your self-love and self-confidence comes in contact with.

Make yourself a beautiful day!

Amethyste Angels - Trust Your Journey Meditation & Affirmations

The vibration of the angels is a very high and fine note of joy.

Angels are light, playful, and also very powerful. They encourage us to play as often and as well as they protect and shield us from harm.

Because the angels are so joyful, they want us to be joyful, too.

It can be hard to remember this if we are in transition, going through a midlife change, or enduring a major challenge in life.

Often, we are not sure whether we’ve made the right choices or what to do or where to go next.

The angels want us to relax and find something to feel joyful about. The angels are here to help us move along assuredly in life, and to restore our peace and strengthen our serenity.

If you are going through a tough period of your life, whether it’s been going on for days, weeks, or even years, have faith. Stay strong in the faith that God and the angels are beside and always with you along the way.

Take time to sit, be still, and go quietly within to sense where your joy is. When you are following your joy, and expressing your happiest self, no matter what is going on in your life, it will be beautiful.

Call upon the angels to support you on your journey today, and trust that whatever decisions you make, they can help you through. Whether success or failure, the angels can guide you to the next step. There are no mistakes – only lessons the angels want to comfort you as you learn.

Your journey is worthy of your trust, and will go much better when you practice trust and ask the angels to help you along the way!

Mini Guided Meditation to Trust Your Journey

Sit comfortably. Straighten your spine and gently draw your shoulders back as though a force were pulling them from behind you. Hold your head up. Relax every muscle from the top of your head to the tips of your toes, going slowly. Breathe deeply and slowly. Visualize light of any color surrounding you. Using your imagination, bring the angels to you with your intention and love. Imagine your appreciation growing, and a magnetic force within you drawing the angels at a speed that is comfortable for you. Imagine your mind and psyche relaxing to receive the following angel affirmations…

Angel Affirmations to Trust Your Journey

I trust my journey.

I am always where I am supposed to be.

I feel joyful about where I am today.

Every decision I’ve ever made and ever will make is the perfect decision for my life path.

I trust the angels to guide, support, and protect me on my journey.

I am safe, and I am loved.

I trust my journey.

Angel blessings!

Amethyste Angels - Energetic Giving & Heavy Heart

Amethyste Angels – Energetic Giving & Heavy Heart

[The angels answer your questions through Amethyste Rah (aka Cassendre Xavier)… Send your questions to: cxwriting (at) gmail dot com. Unless otherwise requested, your question will be reprinted and answered and your name will be changed.]

Laura asks:

I have days when I’m very, very happy giving and helping people in need, and some who don’t know they need help. I’m content with life most days, but sometimes, like today, my heart is so very heavy. Can you help me understand why or how this happens?

Dear Laura,

The angels are telling me that your giving and receiving energies are temporarily unbalanced.

As creative people, and as lightworkers, we contain large and some might say infinite amounts of energy, which is to not only serve and create but also to rest and receive. Both are equally important.

For various reasons we as lightworkers tend to give more and receive less. This creates confusion and weakness at first, and if left unchecked, ends up as burnout and resentment.

We also often make the mistake of thinking that some people need our help when they actually don’t or could use a lot less of our help than we’re offering. We as lightworkers often fall prey to codependent, enabling behavior, and would do well to remember that a persun’s journey is very powerful and essential to their growth. What may appear to be unbearable pain is exactly what they need to go through and are built to withstand for their growth and greater good.

In order to balance your giving and receiving energies, try these techniques:

1)   Spend more time receiving than you’re used to.

2)   Allow more people to experience their lessons and come to you for assistance if they need it.

3)   Continue to serve others while allowing others to serve and support you, and check to ensure your giving and receiving energies are balanced and harmonious.

The angels want us all to know that we can do no wrong, and that so-called mistakes are merely opportunities for more growth, love, and joy, so be happy you have reached this point in your life, and made such a good impact in the lives of those you have loved and tried to support!

Angel blessings,

Amethyste

Audre Lorde Loved Her Period, Too

Guess what time it is? Whoo-hoo!!! I'm that chyk you never met who actually digs The Red "Curse". Enjoys "When her friend visits". Did you know? Audre Lorde enjoyed her time of the month, too. The self-described, "Black, lesbian, warrior, poet, mother," 14 year cancer and double mastectomy survivor, Amazon, and former Poet Laureate with parents from the Caribbean wrote about it in her "biomythography" called "Zami: A New Spelling of My Name", which if you haven't read makes you, Oh, I dunno, about 40% less sexy than the rest of us. Run, don't walk! Sorry about the run-on sentences there. I'm just a little excited.  HAPPY Menstruation, everybody!

Amethyste Angels - Fear of Female Power

Amethyste Angels – Fear of Female Power

by Amethyste Rah

As fellow and sistren lightworkers, we often support one another as we grow in our professional and personal lives.

“Amy” wrote in about a series of nightmares she’d been having about power. She was having fears of masculine power, dreaming about running from rapists, feeling unprotected by a male hero type, and not knowing how to use her strength or her voice. I wrote to her thusly:

Dear Amy,

I read your post once quickly, then called upon the angels to assist me in interpreting it for you. Hope it helps!

============

Interpretation:

You are struggling with your own power. The dream shows you your fears around expressing or perhaps speaking all, and not just some areas of your power. You dream of attempted rape, but it is not a sexual thing. As you know, rape is not about sex but about rage and inappropriate use of power. There are ways that society or our friends and family approve of women’s use of power, and ways women fear our power will alienate or make us unattractive or intimidating to potential mates or our female peers.

Suggestions:

1)  Study the chakra that deals with power (I believe it’s the 3rd chakra with the color yellow, but I could be wrong…). I highly recommend “Chakra Clearing” by Doreen Virtue, which is a hardcover book and audio guided meditation for clearing the chakras in the morning and in the evening. She particularly addresses our relationship to power as lightworkers, learning to have the strength to use our voices, and remembering that in this day, age, time, and place, we are generally safe to do so.

2)  Work also with your throat chakra. (Again, see “Chakra Clearing” by Doreen Virtue.)

3)  Add a special crystal or gem and wear as a necklace to remind yourself that you are protected, you can express your power, you can speak your power, and you are safe.

4)  Do past life regression and psychic therapy about the lives you’ve had in the past where your power has threatened others and perhaps led to painful and unfortunate circumstances for you. As you know, many lightworkers were tortured and killed for our work. But now, the world is much safer for lightworkers. As I’ve heard Doreen Virtue say, “Before, they used to burn us at the stake, now they give us book deals!” Adding past life regression and psychic therapy to your work will help you feel safe in, and to express your power as a modern-day lightworker.

5)  Seek examples of powerful women you feel comfortable with. When I first started therapy as an incest survivor, I worked on my fear of my own feminine power. Because females were victims in the spaces where I was as a child, I grew up with masculine tendencies to keep myself safe. Later, when I wanted to grow more of my feminine self, I had the opportunity to address power as a woman with feminine traits. I sought out examples of feminine powerful, intelligent women who were successful in their professions, as well as appealing to their mates. Do that for yourself.

6) Create affirmations for yourself and your feelings about being powerful. Write them daily and say them to yourself.

7)  Take one baby step towards expressing your power every day. Read books about boundaries and assertiveness and follow their advice. Use all resources that appeal to you, including YouTube tutorials and recorded guided meditations from like-minded lightworkers.

Basically, you are and need to activate the "inner male" you seek to protect you. You can uncover and cultivate the inner power you have and begin balancing the scales of male and female, power to express as well as ability to receive, being assertive and being indirect. You can learn to release your fears of being a powerful woman, and your ages old fears of being a fully active lightworker. Begin seeing your world as friendly, and your power as your friend.

Angel blessings and love to hear your progress!

Survivors & Recovery: You Deserve to Feel Better

Survivors & Recovery: You Deserve to Feel Better

If you feel bad with someone or doing something, stop justifying, and move away. Learn to move towards and spend more time on people and activities that feel better to your soul.

We are meant to be happy. We are supposed to feel joyful, at rest, and comfortable in our skins, beings, homes, places of employ, and in our lives in general. We are designed to experience pleasure and we are often forgetting that feeling good is our birthright.

Yes, life is full of contrast and challenges and we are also designed to experience a myriad of emotions to match these. However, the point we are here to try to remain at is one of balance, joy, and contentment.

As survivors of abuse or neglect, or as people dealing with recovery of all kinds, we often forget this. We forget our right to pleasure and to feel good. We have experienced such horrific acts and violations, we have felt so bad so much of the time, or we as addicts have “used” substances or compulsive behaviors to feel better or ease some of our pain, or even to feel good. But is this real? Are these feelings produced by any means other than spiritual lasting in any way? I believe they’re not, which is why we often forget to pay attention to our feelings.

We as survivors/addicts, move through a blur of emotions, often numbed out by a combination of chemical trickery (be it food, alcohol, or drugs), or behavioral compulsions (romance&sex addiction, codependence, or having no close relationships at all), plus the general feeling of deserving and being able to handle painful relationships and situations.

We need to decrease our tolerance for pain. We need to notice when communication with a so-called friend involves too much conflict to make sense to continue. We need to see ourselves through the eyes of someone who loves us more than we often have the knowledge, habit, or willingness to love ourselves.

Say no to pain. Breathe through and experience the kind of pain that cannot be avoided – when it relates to doing something good for yourself, like working out or getting inoculated, or giving birth. Breathe through going through rough times like doing your taxes or building your business or extending your academic career or credentials. But say no to pain of endless struggle, of ongoing conflicts with personality types who enjoy drama. Just say no, and say yes to feeling better. Because you deserve it, no matter what your past says. And you need to not only get better for yourself, but to demonstrate recovery and wellness for your brothers and sisters along the way.

diary of a renaissance negresse: Is That It?

I'm so excited to learn that Bob Geldof's autobio "Is That It" is still in print.
I love that book so much.
What made me search it was that I've taken to signing off, "Muy danke" and "Mucha danke" lately. Often I think of how I like to mix my languages, like saying "especialment" or using "ment" at the end of English words which usually end with "ly". I've been gradualment making the changes and enjoying Moi-self greatment!
I got this from two most inspiring sources, Le Grande Miss Piggy, and a really inept and funny English as a second language teacher Geldof worked with in his travels. Those parts of the book had me rollin'!

I used his story of giving up grapes for Lent in one of my college acting classes. I read it word for word as a monologue, and I got a good grade in it!

What a beautiful book. What a beautiful life. I'll never forget his Pentax camera or red corduroy jeans that were so tight they got him all the necessary action.
Good stuff.

Turmeric & Coconut Oil Paste for Eczema

...poison oak, heat rash, and other minor skin irritations...

Take a healthy pinch (half a dime-size/quarter teaspoon) of ground turmeric and put it in the middle of your palm. Add a little more than the same amount of coconut oil. Mash it up with a teaspoon. The heat of your hand will melt the oil if it's solid.
Apply liberally (you can make it as thin and runny or thick and solid as you want) often. Relieves itch for 2-4 hours. Reapply often. Rinse between uses if you want.
Experiment to find what works for you. You can also add diluted apple cider vinegar, also known to relieve itchy skin irritations.
Note that causes of eczema range not only from dietary and environmental allergies but also stress. (I read that the other day and am sharing it because I hadn't known it until then!)

Best wishes for a speedy relief!
